Anbumani Ramadoss, the health minister, says the habits of celebrities such as Khan are an enormous influence on young people. But Khan, Hindi cinema's most bankable star, sees no grounds for censorship.
"I think there is a huge amount of creative freedom that should be allowed in cinema," he told a press conference broadcast on the Times Now news channel on Monday. "It is make-believe ... We should not have huge censorship."
Khan recently played a glamorous Mumbai gangster in the film "Don", which was advertised with a lingering shot of him exhaling slow-motion billows of cigarette smoke at the screen, cut with shots of him in sharp clothes and dancing with beautiful women.
But even if film heroines are not repelled by the habit, Ramadoss is.
"Please don't smoke in your movies, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan," the health minister said in an interview with CNN-IBN broadcast on Sunday. "Children are being affected. Fourteen-year-olds are taking to tobacco."
However, Khan stressed that he was no advocate for smoking, even if his art requires him to light up occasionally.
"Every time I'm in front of a television channel I always say, 'children, don't smoke, it kills you.'" He told reporters. "It's the worst habit and I want to give it up as soon as possible."

well it thrue it is his life and we have to respect his derisions . . . I dont agry with the minister or whatever he is that king khan can pass his bad habid to youngest (if they will start smoking just because they feel liked . . . )look at me am kinder upsest with king khan ,am his huge fann and i love him allot but it doesnt mean that i will start to smok just because he does . . . So live him alone ,let him to enjoy his life as he works very hard for his fans ,his self and femaly . . . He is busy and has allot of stress and without being acused/abused with smoking ,drinking ,having fight with big b or with some other nonsens he being blamed without any reasons . . . Dont get me wrong am against smoking but i dont blame king khan as it is very hard to say no to that smoking habid . . . Me and his fans want to see him healthy and not to have any bad habids but hellooo he is human being and he cant be perfect (i will all ways pray for him to be healthy ,to be naturall and to be all ways his self no matter what )even he is a star he has all right to do whatever he wants without being abused and acused . . . it his choice unless he brakes any low roles (smoking doesnt brake any role . . . ) so prime minister ,low or whatever just do your job and cach reall criminalls like drug dealers ,killers . . . As i now Sharukh khan doesnt belong to that list . . . So take a chill pill man . . .
