The year is coming to an end which means Awards Season is just around the corner. Since most of the awards are only there to pander the king-size egos of our Bollywood stars, we thought its only appropriate Our Bollywood picks the best and worse of 2007. Feel free to agree or tear down the picks!
Best Actor: We always cry foul play when Shahrukh walks away with this award in the numerous awards show. However this year we happily bestow this award to King Khan for his stellar performance in Chak De India. After Swades, this was SRK’s most restrained and impactful performance. Kudos for SRK for making us root for the dark and brooding Kabir Khan.
Best Actress: Kareena for Jab We Met and Aishwarya for Guru all popped up in our mind however it’s Tabu for Namesake, who walks away with the award. The movie may not be exactly Bollywood however apni Tabu is. She takes your breath away with her performance as she managed to infuse the character of Ashima with a natural grace seldom seen on cinema. From a young bride to a librarian with an empty nest , Tabu tackles all the nuances beautifully!
More picks after the jump
Best Film: A tie between Chak De India and Taare Zameen Par. Other honorable mentions include Dharma, Guru and Namastey Londan. One of the main reasons for picking these two films were because they were successful in blurring the lines between commercial and art house films and were not ashamed of their Bollywood roots.
Phenomena of the Year: The Great Indian Wedding! Yes we are talking about the Abhiwarya Wedding which turned the whole nation into a bunch of voyeurs who were happy to lap up details like what Ash had for lunch or what Amitabh wrote on the wedding cards! Aishwarya and Abhishek getting hitched was no doubt the biggest story of the year and for once no one was interested in Shilpa Shetty and here shenanigans!
Biggest Dud of the Year: A love story called Saawariya and an abomination called RGV’s Sholay. Common thread between the two? Both had directors suffer from a God Complex and are of the opinion that they were the best things since Slice Bread. How the mighty fall!
At this junction we would like to mention films like No Smoking, Dharma and Cheeni Kum. All completely different from each other however they all broke from the norms of conventional Bollywood with great aplomb.
So these are some of our choices and keep watching this space for more picks.
