Here is some scoop on Mira Nair's upcoming film Shantaram. Looks like Mr Amitabh Bachchan may join the cast too which also has Johnny Depp in the lead. The film is based on the real-life story of Gregory David Roberts, an Australian former convict and author of 2004’s eponymous book.

"Unlike the movies where the white man comes to the ‘dark continent’ and teaches how to light a candle, make electricity or whatever, this is a film about a man who is ashamed, guilty, who has no self esteem at all, who is a convict, heroin addict and he discovers what honor is,” says Nair.

The script is being written by Eric Roth and production is likely to begin as soon as this fall, with a possible 2008 release and Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Brad Pitt’s Plan B will be producing the film
