Rajeev Masand: Not many people know this but the Munnabhai films were conceived with you in mind. Also the first film Munnabhai MBBS was a film in which you even collaborated with some of the writing portions. In fact you have been very graciously saying that you would not have done as good a job as Sanjay Dutt did in the two films. What did you think about the second Munnabhai film that
Shah Rukh Khan: I haven’t seen it but my wife and kids have seen it twice and they loved it. To be honest, I wasn’t in town when the first Munnabhai came out. My family went to see the film because they knew that I was extremely keen on watching it.
Raju Hirani’s simplicity of storytelling is the most wonderful thing about the film. In fact I loved the title of the film when I heard it. Vidhu Vinod Chopra had come to me and he was extremely passionate to make the film but I had to undergo a surgery at that time.
Rajeev Masand: So, what was the last film you watched on a DVD?
Shah Rukh Khan: I think the last one I watched was Rang de Basanti. Before that I watched Krrish in a cinema theatre. I have been watching some English dramas of late. I recently watched Murder One and Prison Break.
Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you got into a fight?
Shah Rukh Khan: I don’t fight with anyone. I haven’t gotten into a fight for a long time really.
Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you wanted to punch someone?
Shah Rukh Khan: I will wait till I hear your review of Don. I might want to punch you, who knows?
Rajeev Masand: Can you imagine what your career would have been had you not done films like Darr, Baazigar and Anjam.
Shah Rukh Khan: My career would have been nothing if I had not done those films. Those films not only did well but they made me commercially viable as well. It made me unpredictable as an actor and I still live on that unpredictability. The character that I played in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna may not go down well with a lot of people. But somewhere down the line people will see you as this extremely unpredictable guy who can say or do anything.
Today, when I play a Don nobody is turning around saying Shah Rukh is doing a negative role. It has been accepted now. So it has given me a certain edge above others. Rajeev Masand: What is the most odd piece of gossip that you have heard about yourself?
Shah Rukh Khan: I don’t know if its odd any longer. People think that I’m a gay. Recently somebody asked me if I’m still in touch with my feminine side. They ask me why did I do the Lux ad and things like that. They are very sweet about it but I know where they are heading. I think there is a feminine side to me, as people like to assume. This might rank as their top most gossip.
Then there was this gossip that I love fair women. And that’s why I don’t cheat on my family at home. I go abroad and am seen with fair ladies. Then there was this about my house that I have no windows at home because I want to make sure that nobody sees me. And many more such things have been said about me. This just keeps going on and on.
Rajeev Masand: Do you think that money can buy happiness?
Shah Rukh Khan: It makes it easier to get happiness. I do believe in a material world to a certain extent. I think material happiness is quite an important step before you look for spiritual happiness. There are people who think the other way round. They might also be right. But in the kind of education and the world where I have grown up, and we all are growing up, a certain level of consumerism become a reality.
Rajeev Masand: You are known to be a gizmo freak. What is the last toy that you purchased?
Shah Rukh Khan: I am waiting for the Playstation three to come up. I like Playstation. I am not a fan of an X-BOX 360, but Playstation is something that I am eagerly waiting for. It’s coming out in November, so either on my birthday or my son’s birthday we might have an excuse to buy it as a gift for either of us. If my wife doesn’t allow me to buy it for my son, he will buy it for me.
Rajeev Masand: What works better with the kids? A yelling or pasting?
Shah Rukh Khan: I never yell at kids. I just hug them hard and threaten them not to do something again. I think the yelling part should be left to the moms. Moms yell, fathers must laugh it off.
Kids are closer to their moms, so you need to be nice to them to win them over. Whenever mom yells, I quickly move in and gain some brownie points by being kind to them. I would never be aggressive with a woman or a little child. I would rather die before I raise hand on a little kid or a lady.
Rajeev Masand: For what subjects do your kids come to you for help?
Shah Rukh Khan: I teach them Hindi. I am really very keen on teaching them the language because kids these days are weak at it. Everything has become anglicised today. So, I make it a point to teach them. I can help them with Math only till fifth standard because after that I was no good at it. I was very good with Sciences till about eighth standard. I teach them as and when they need me. But I make it a point to teach them Math and Hindi.
