Looks like the Gen X has got a new hero and now books about the Mahatama are selling by cartloads! According to the DNA newspaper “The Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal (BSM), the Tardeo-based store that stocks Gandhian literature, usually sells 1,500 copies of My Experiments with Truth. This year, the peak moved up some 3000 per cent”
“This shop has never seen so many visitors!” said Tulsidas Somaiya, BSM programme coordinator. “We grossed sales of Rs5 lakh in September after Lage Raho’s release, against our earlier high of Rs1.5 lakh last December.”
“We have been advertising for years on Gandhi Jayanti, offering a 50 per cent discount,” said Manoj Barot, a sales representative at BSM. “We have been here for ages, but people never knew we existed. Today we have not even had time for lunch.”
“Our representatives merely stood outside the theatres holding the books. They were picked up eagerly,” Somaiya said. “Every day we sold 125 to 150 copies per theatre in just one hour, mostly to youngsters.”
So whoever said that Cinema only entertains and not inspires should take a cue from LRM’s book!
