Shabana Azmi is truly a woman of substance. I just love the woman and think she is one of the most articulate and elegant celebrities ever. One doesn’t need to really talk about her acting prowess also and actors of her caliber are a rare breed. Shabana Azmi has now signed an international project called ‘Banglatown Banquet’, where she will play a woman living in
East London. It’s a BBC Production and she essays a role of a South Asian woman going through mid-life crisis. This is what she says about the movie:
“Her daughter is hopping mad. Finally my character leaves the husband and comes into her own. But it's done in a way that brings in a lot of cultural complexities. She's not a victim at all. I like that. It's written by Tannika Gupta who wrote ‘Waiting Room.’"
“The film is directed by Hettie McDonald (who made a beautiful film, ‘Beautiful Thing,’ about gay love). What makes this project even more interesting is the fact that Ayesha Dharkar plays Shabana's daughter. Earlier Dharker had played the same part in Roland Joffe's City Of Joy.”
