Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna Review

To some it’s Cranked, to a friend of mine its Skunk, but for me it’s good old KANK. I finally caught the movie (stress on finally) and to the surprise of everyone and may I add myself loved it! Before all the puritans start screaming blasphemy let me just say a) I have never been enamored by KJ movies b) Nor am I fan of SRK the actor (though he rocks as a person) and  c) KJ hasn’t paid me anything for this review!

Like all Johar movies, this one is also all fun and games in the beginning.  KANK REVIEW.JPG But to be fair to the director the infidelity angle just doesn’t come out of the blue. From the very beginning we see the chinks in both the couple’s marriages, though it’s more subtle in the case of Maya and Rishie. Like many I also felt frustrated with Maya and Dev who had almost perfect life partners and who just felt victimized all the time! However the characters were flawed and kudos to KJ for taking these two mainstream superstars down that road. SRK may grind his teeth a lot, but it was quite refreshing to see him as someone who is so cynical! His humor may be dark but it still made you laugh!

When it comes to performances, I think Abhishek was great as usual and Amitabh Bachchan also has his moments (though Sexy Sam was too much to handle at times!). I really liked the tension between SRK and Big B and in moments like those Bachchan totally redeemed himself. Preity was great as the independent women however she didn’t look or dress like an Editor of a top magazine or a mother of an eight year old. I wish Johar had cut down all those disco numbers and given more footage to her!  Also the Dev and Rhea confrontation in the end could be a little longer and that one slap wasn’t enough!  The other thing which was hard to digest was Rhea and Rishie after 3 years encouraging Maya in the end to stop Dev from leaving! No one is that generous especially if you have been wronged!

Go watch the movie, its not as bad as they say it is! Even the adultery angle has been handled well. Just remember this is not a hard hitting film, nor does it claim to be. This is very much like a Karan Johar love story set in different situations and circumstances.
