Karan Johar On KANK

In an interview on the website MSN, Karan Johar talks about his upcoming film KANK, life and his expectations! Here are some excerpts from the interview:

On adulation:
"I don't know whether I should take credit for that, though I'd love to. I do love KabhiAlvidaNaaKehna3.jpg people. I love interacting with everyone from friends to fans. Somewhere, that innate warmth reaches out to people,"

On Ram Gopal Verma:
"I'll speak on this for the last time and then move on. In my opinion Ram Gopal Varma is one of the finest filmmakers of our country. His 'Satya', 'Company' and 'Sarkar' make a trilogy of terrific gangster films.
When he has so much work on hand I wonder why he keeps obsessing with what I do! I know he doesn't respect my work. But could he please keep quiet about what I do?"

On Cannes:
"Bollywood, Hollywood... just give me my daily flick. Adding to my pleasure in Cannes was Preity. We both talk non-stop. Together we constitute Talkathon 2006.

"Between the two of us we leave no room for a third person to talk. Unless it happens to be AbhishekBachchan who beats us both hollow. Even Preity has to shut up when Abhishek starts talking. Yup, he takes the cake when it comes to gabbling."

On SRK:
"Recently 'Veer-Zaara' was premiered in Paris. I was unfortunately not there with Yash uncle (Yash Chopra), Preity and Rani. But Shah Rukh was there. And the way he was greeted proves that Shah Rukh is not only god in but in Europe as well.
"My Paris distributor said it felt like Elvis Presley had been reborn when he saw the ovation Shah Rukh got. So yes, I'd say he's the biggest USP of KANK."

 On Bollywood Going Global:
"We saw what a film can do abroad when 'Lagaan', 'Devdas' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' (K3G) were released. If KANK goes several steps further than K3G it would be because of the process that my father (producer Yash Johar) started of taking our company's films to places outside the traditional Indian market."

Hmmm... i must say that being a Hindi Movie fan, i often find that I had to abandon reality to an extent when in a theatre watching them - not that i minded... it is an excapist genre, most of the time anyway, but, after haveing watched KANK, id like to implore BOllywood to focus more on the other faces of love. Love is such a dynamic emotion, so multidimensional, and i was so greatful that KANK took the other face of it into consideration and decided to throw it in the face of indian movie goers that were so accustomed to boy meets girl, girl meets boy, girl hates boy, boy loves girl, girl falls for boy, parents object, major family issues, then everything is hunky dory after 4 songs, elaborate sets, melodramatic crocodile tears and a villian in the mix just for fun! CYNNICAL, yes yes i know, but, its true - come one u all know it!

But KANK, i thank you for from the bottom of my heart - because i could relate to it.. it wasnt what the characters felt - it was how they made me feel that i found so moving. thank you for depicting that this kinda love shouldnt be hidden, or be considered something to be ashamed of, but understood and aprpeciated for what it is - true, and honest, and intense and so fulfilling when experienced between two people that need it more than want it.

All mediagoers why u r writing +ve review about KANK just becoz it's a KJ film. WHo knows and who had seen that KANK has done tremendous collections in abroad. Now adays, even movies like Golmaal and Malamaal done the good business at Box Office just becoz of Multiplexes. If KANK has made by some other producer of average popularity and also instead of huge star cast like AB, SRK, some other actors have worked in it, then definately film has been flopped in its first week only. My request is only that plz don't give unneccessary hype like Komal Nahata commenting +vely on KANK's collections at Box-office. As per my opinion KANK is not a hit, becoz the movie budget is Rs.50 crore but it harldy done well in India and we can't declare a film hit which done well in abroad. If u really consider film a hit then, i will say "Malamaal Weekly" was the huge hit, becoz it has been made just a small budget of Rs.7 crore and amazingly it collects Rs.27 crores at box-office so all media & award organizer doesn't feel to consider film "MW" for an awards this year.

After such a long time I sat with my wife and watched Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) movie over the weekend. We thought this would be another good movie like Johar family have produced in the past. The movie revolves around SRK, which I think is an over rated actor, and Rani Mukherjee, who is pretty good. The other couple of AB and PZ was good but I must say that AB did a wonderful job in this movie and has been improving day by day. Back to the subject.....How many families there are in our culture who love their love ones like that. I mean....come on...don't you think this is too out of the way. How many couples have divorced because of that. Don't you think that these movies give bad "ideas" of it is ok to marry with one but if you love some one else sure you could leave your spouse and go have fun with the other one. Another disturbing scene of where Dev and his lover (RM) made love even at that time they were still married to their spouses. That is totally ridiculous...I don't think it happens in every sub-continent family. The movie portrays probably 1% of the total population of sub continent. Call me backward but I think this movie sucks and does not represent the true tradition of sub-continent.
