Is Piracy Funding Terrorism In India?

Pirated DVDs in India are available practically on every street corner and considering the exorbitant prices we pay for original DVDs, the pirated versions are pretty tempting. However not only does piracy affect the Film Industry but also is indirectly funding terror attacks like 7/11. No I haven’t made up this shocking revelation and according to recent surveys and news channels, piracy is one way that the underworld is able to fund its activities: This is what M N Kapasi, VFI    NoPiracy150.gif Spokesperson and MD, Excel Home Videos had to say:

"The huge piracy racket is a multi-crore money spinner for the underworld and their allied terror activists. The money is used to fund their terror activities and other anti social commitments".

Chander Lall, MPA-India head and Senior Partner in the law firm of Lall and Sethi Advocates further adds:

"There is now documented evidence that film piracy funds organized crime. The profit percentages are so high that organized crime considers film piracy more lucrative than even drug peddling. It is about time that enforcement agencies recognize this fact and crack down on these terror shops."

I know most of us have watched or bought a pirated DVD, however it is high time we stop, if not for the sake of the Indian Film Industry, then for the sake of our country . Remember SAY NO TO PIRACY!

According to estimates the piracy market is worth 1400 crore rupees and its growing, you cant expect govt agencies to curb this menace as long as people of India are willing to enjoy these pirated versions

What is police doing to stop the piracy?

never bought any pirated dvd - except the one got by legal (and good) shops who sell mostly legal ware.

but as long as legal dvds especially in bollywood are in such low quality there is no reason to buy originals. you don't get anything more by that.
producers must that understand. not so much ads in dvds. not allways telling buyers anything about how criminal piracy is - cause such ads are only on legal dvds.

of course crime has to be stopped.

but i also dont like such arguments used in shadow of bomb blasts.

The Indian police is not doing anything. I visit Pallika Bazar in Delhi quite often which is an underground market where one gets Bollywood, Hollywood, Rock Concerts, PSP DVDS etc for 2 US$ where one DVD contains 3 movies!

Pirated discs are selling openly and most of the time the shop keepers just pay a monthly fee to the police as hush money. There are raids occasionly but the next day the shops are up and about!

Micheal you have a valid point when it comes to Indian original DVDs which offer nothing and are just like VCDs.But even if they add extra footage, people will stil opt for the pirate version cos that would cost 100 rupees while the original anywhre from 400 to 700 rupees.

The change would only happen once the whole mindset of the people changes and the ticket prices and original dvd/vcd prices have to go down.

Well, I think this is all a conspiracy by the music industry guys to stop something they could have easily done by spinning out cheaper, good quality DVDs. Legal ones are pathetic and not nearly enough value for money.

Hi,
I dont think the music companies would indulge in conspiracies when the issue is national security. Piracy is rampant in Pakistan where there are units dedicated to just making pirated copies and its a flourishing business. I am not saying all of those ppl are terrorists but some of them have been linked to the underworld in India.

Also recently the Roshans and the companies associated with Krrish were threatened by someone in Pakistan and were told to call off the anti piracy drive.
