Covering Bollywood and the Hindi Cinema

With great anticipation I went and watched Naseeruddin Shah’s 'Yun Hota To Kya Hota' and boy was I disappointed! The movie opens with the beautiful New York skyline and a haunting theme. The date is 28^th August 2001 and we all know what is going to take place. The movie then cuts into the lives and trials of four individuals who are at a crossroads in their life and the US  seems to be the ultimate solution to all their problems. I am not going to delve further into the story for many of you may not have watched it yet.                                                                

The four stories are insipid and Shah seems lost on how to make them flow. Very soon you’ll get bored with all the characters. However that doesn’t mean that the actors are at fault as all the actors notably Ratna Pathak, the guy who played Rahul and Konkona Sen have given some great performances. The movie does pick up in the last 40 minutes or so and even though you know how it will end, you can’t help but hope for a different ending! Watching the September 11 events unfold once again is disturbing and quite poignant. So the question being, should you watch Shah’s directorial venture? Well wait for the DVD as you have always have the option of Fast Forward!
