They say in showbiz, no publicity is bad publicity and this definitely holds true in the new Aamir Khan-Kajol starrer Fanaa. This movie was predicted a blockbuster even when it was on paper. Why wouldn’t it be if you think about? There’s superstar Aamir Khan, arguably the best actor the industry has seen in the last decade. Throw in the prestigious Yash Chopra banner and the fact it was touted as Kajol’s comeback vehicle. But when the promos appeared even the most die hard Aamir Khan fan (including me) had some reservations. This movie lacked charisma and the pairing was totally“thanda” (Bollywood lingo) or lacking any chemistry.
So conveniently right before the release Aamir Khan and some of his friends took part in some anti government rally and bingo he was right in the centre of the Narmada Dam issue. We do praise him for exercising his constitutional right but I’m sure he was aware of the repercussions and how the ban happy BJP Govt in Gujarat would react. Not only were they burning his effigies (BJP has always been a tad melodramatic) but also banned Fanaa across Gujarat. What happened next was Aamir appearing in every national news channel and Fanaa taking a record opening of 32 crores ! In fact its now one of the biggest grosser's of the year and still doing strong business.
